The
leading causes of death in the industrialized world today are
cardiovascular disease, cancer, and pulmonary disease. They
all have one thing in common: the involvement of the patients
vasculature in disease formation and progression. All of these
diseases are accompanied, and often preceded, by changes in
a patients blood vessels.
Despite the arterial systems involvement in so many prominent
diseases, a safe and effective minimally invasive means for
obtaining samples of arterial tissue from patients has not been
available until now. Vascular BioSciences has recognized this
need and created the worlds first endoarterial biopsy
catheter, a device designed to obtain biopsy specimens from
the inner layers of an artery via a minimally invasive technique.
Vascular BioSciences has developed the endoarterial biopsy catheter
for the study, diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of vascular-based
diseases.
The endoarterial biopsy catheter obtains arterial biopsy samples
from vascular-based disease patients in order to provide physicians
with vital information about each patients disease characteristics.
This will enable physicians to make more informed treatment
decisions that will lead to better patient outcomes.
Arterial biopsies can be analyzed using genomic and proteomic
methods in order to describe the current status of a patients
condition and provide important information about eventual disease
progression.
The catheter will provide a means for monitoring therapeutic
interventions, optimizing medical management, customizing diagnosis
and therapy, and anticipating future adverse events through
the early identification of disease markers in arterial biopsies
from patients.
Arterial biopsies can also provide the starting material for
the ex vivo cell culture of autologous vascular grafts and other
autologous therapies using a patients own tissue.
Information contained in arterial biopsies identifies proteins
and receptors involved in vascular-based diseases which can
be used in pharmaceutical drug discovery and development.
Vascular BioSciences focuses on improving the diagnosis and
medical management of primary and secondary pulmonary hypertension,
acute and chronic lung transplant rejection, vasculitis, pulmonary
manifestations of collagen vascular diseases such as lupus and
scleroderma, primary and secondary lung cancer, coronary artery
disease, peripheral vascular disease, and pharmaceutical drug
discovery and development.
CAUTION - Investigational Device. Limited by Federal
law to investigational use.
This device should be used only by physicians with a thorough
understanding of percutaneous interventional procedures.
